Grove is committed to providing the safest and healthiest products to your family while remaining fully transparent in the process, so your purchasing decisions can be stress-free. Whether sustainably sourced ingredients or safe materials, we are committed to partnering with industry-leading certifications that raise the bar of safety and sustainability. Product certifications include, but are not limited to: EPA Safer Choice, USDA BioPreferred, EWG Verified, Leaping Bunny, USDA Organic & Oregon Tilth, Fair Rubber Association, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), How2Recycle, Biodegradable Products Institute and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)®. Read on below to learn more about some of these important certifications that our products carry.
EWG Verified
To provide our customers with the highest standard of ingredient transparency, we’ve partnered with the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit organization that champions environment legislation and reviews personal care products against rigorous international standards to assess their human and environmental health risks.
EWG VERIFIED™ means that a product meets the EWG’s strict standards for healthy ingredients, complete ingredient transparency, and good manufacturing practices — the highest industry standard. In order to be verified, the product must be free of contaminants, avoid ingredients that have potential health and environmental concerns, score a low hazard rating in EWG’s cosmetics database, Skin Deep, and fully disclose all ingredients, including allergens and fragrances.
In keeping up with our commitment to health and transparency, our goal is to have all Rooted Beauty skin and body care products EWG VERIFIED™.
To find out more on how they are raising the bar for strict health and transparency criteria, check out EWG’s Unacceptable and Restricted ingredients list.
EPA Safer Choice
EPA Safer Choice is a certification that verifies stringent criteria based on human and environmental health, as well as compliance with the EPA’s Safer Chemical Ingredients List. In order to obtain the Safer Choice label, products must meet stringent health, environmental and transparency criteria, where each and every ingredient is screened for potential adverse health effects. In addition to ingredient reviews, the product’s packaging and performance are also evaluated to ensure it’s both uncompromisingly safe and efficacious. We know reading labels can be stressful, but the Safer Choice logo makes it easy. Next time you see the Safer Choice label on Grove cleaning products, such as our hand soap and liquid laundry, you can trust they were made using the safest ingredients available.
“EPA/Safer Choice recognition does not constitute endorsement of these products. The Safer Choice logo signifies that the products’ formulas, as Grove Collaborative has represented it to the EPA, contain ingredients with more positive human health and environmental characteristics than conventional products of the same type. EPA/Safer Choice relies solely on Grove Collaborative, its integrity and good faith, for information on the products’ composition, ingredients and attributes. EPA/Safer Choice has not independently identified, that is, via chemical analysis, the ingredients in the products’ formula, nor evaluated any of Grove Collaborative non-ingredient claims. EPA/Safer Choice provides its evaluation only as to the products’ human health and environmental characteristics, as specified in the Standard and based on currently available information and scientific understanding.”
USDA BioPreferred
Managed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the goal of the BioPreferred Program is to increase the purchase and use of biobased products, which are derived from plants and other renewable agricultural, marine, and forestry materials and provide an alternative to conventional petroleum-derived products.
We know it's challenging to assess sustainable attributes when shopping for cleaning products, so we wanted to make it easy by placing the USDA certified label and biobased percentage directly on the packaging. And yes, you saw correctly: the majority of our products are over 90 percent biobased.
BPI
The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) is the leading North American certification for compostable products. Compostable means that a product can break down entirely into its natural organic elements within about 90 days without causing any harm to the environment. In order to get the BPI logo, the product is independently tested and verified according to scientifically based compostability standards. The BPI logo not only indicates if a product can be composted, but also under what conditions. For example, it will clearly state if the material can be composted at home or more commonly, at an industrial municipal facility, like our Seedling compostable kitchen wipes.
FSC
The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) is a global, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of responsible forest management worldwide. FSC defines standards based on agreed principles for responsible forest stewardship that are supported by environmental, social, and economic stakeholders. Overall, FSC® helps take care of forests and the people and wildlife that call them home now and for future generations. To learn more, visit www.fsc.org
The FSC® label means that materials used have been responsibly sourced. For example, by choosing tree-free Seedling Toilet Paper, Paper Towels, Napkins or Tissues you are supporting responsible management of bamboo. Due to our love for forests and a deep commitment to sustainability, we also source FSC® certified paper packaging whenever possible. If you see “FSC Recycled” on your Grove Co. Cleaning Concentrate carton, Peach shampoo bar box, or Superbloom serum case, that means the paper is made from 100% recycled content (either post-consumer or pre-consumer reclaimed materials). As you explore our product assortment, look for our FSC®-certified products on our website.
FSC® is a sustainable forest management solution and Grove Collaborative is proud to be license holder and advocate.

USDA Organic
The US Department of Agriculture's certification verifies agricultural ingredients and products are grown without any chemicals, such as fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. This seal means that a product contains at least 95 percent organically produced ingredients, with the remaining ingredients pre-approved by the national list. While a finished product may not be entirely organic, we use organic ingredients whenever possible and highlight that on ingredient labels and packaging.
While the USDA seal is more prevalent, there are additional certifying bodies, such as Oregon Tilth Certified Organic (OTCO), which certify farms based on the same rigorous USDA standards. (You may have noticed this on our hydrating bar soaps)
GOTS
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification verifies that cotton was grown organically with rigorous environmental and social criteria throughout the entire textile supply chain, “farm to factory.” GOTS is considered the gold standard for sustainable textiles as the certification covers organically grown cotton, which eliminates the use of chemicals (such as pesticides and fertilizers) that put workers and the environment at risk. GOTS also ensures the product is produced responsibly under safe factory conditions and the finished product is free and clear of hazardous chemicals and dyes. We believe in the health and safety of our people and planet which is why all Grove textiles, such as the kitchen towels, are GOTS certified.
